penguin notes

courtesy of mrcairo: did you know that it was Penguin Awareness Day two days ago? i bet you didn't! and, in case you missed it and somehow managed to not spend the day in a tux wearing funny plumage and doing little penguin-dances, April 25th is World Penguin Day.

and in other news, the cheese crackers in the Berkeley Bowl bulk-food section come in many fascinating marine-related shapes: frogs, crabs, dolphins (or perhaps porpoises), starfish, little blobby things that might be turtles, little blobby things that might be shells, and of course...penguins!

penguins are the new monkeys.

me: All instruments and bass hippo performed by Michael Ford.

nacht_musik: "bass hippo"

me: Yep, bass hippo. But then, are there really tenor hippos out there?

nacht_musik: Yeah, they're most commonly played by children who are learning to play the hippo at a particularly early age. Many young children just don't have the handspan to play a full-sized hippo; the 1/3-sized tenor hippo (confusingly referred to as a "2 2/3' hippo" for historical reasons pertaining to the nomenclature traditionally used when constructing ranks of hippos for use in a pipe organ) sounds an octave and a fifth above the standard (bass) hippo, but much of the technique involved can be readily transferred to the standard hippo when the student is ready for the larger instrument.

me: ... I love you.

Wow. That's cute. I'm somewhat amused to find that Davy Jones's voice, at 62, still conjures for me the mental image of a twentysomething british fop. :-)

Also, Wikipedia tells me that "David Bowie's original name was David (Robert) Jones: he changed his name to avoid confusion with the then-more famous Davy Jones." Huh. I don't think ChangesJones would have flown.

Also also, I didn't know anything about this when I wrote your card. :-)

googling "Bowie Changes" gave me this, which is...definitely odd. i think his hair is phosphorescent.

At the very end of that, did you notice the bass guitar solo by a man in a glowing orange shirt and a stylin' grey top hat? :-)

[identity profile] iridium.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
i hadn't, i'd wandered away from the screen the first time i played it. that's awesome...i think in the last few seconds, he doesn't have a head at all. and the top hat is very stylish indeed. ;)

penguins are the new monkeys.

I'll believe that when I see a pirate with a penguin on his shoulder.
