this came up in a conversation, and since the zine i read it in is packed into a box in a closet in California, i decided to go digging through my lj-archive to find it. it's a bell hooks quote, on openness and truth.
There are some folks for whom openness is not about the luxury of "will I choose to share this or that," but rather "will I survive - will I stay alive?" and openness is about how to be well, and telling the truth is about how to put the broken bits & pieces of the heart back together again. It is about being whole, being wholehearted.

Date: 2006-04-10 02:20 am (UTC)hooks is one of those ppl everybody in my field talks about, but very rarely does anything particular or concrete come from overhearing those conversations. this is really... vivid. thanks for sharing it!

Date: 2006-04-10 02:49 am (UTC)i haven't read really anything else of hers; that quote was on the back of a zine on awareness of and how to cope with sexual assault. i've been meaning to go look up something more by her, but haven't done it yet.

Date: 2006-04-18 02:42 am (UTC)just because it's in my head at the moment -- there's a collection of a zine called "doris" that just came out recently as a full book. really, really good, if you like that kind of raw-experience-writing, and if you don't mind reading something that's all cut-and-paste formatting.
